Completed in 2019, the Dah Hsian Library is the biggest library on campus by floor area, and home to NCCU’s second-largest collection. Designed to support modern academic research and collaborative learning, the library integrates seamlessly with its surrounding natural environment—enhancing the campus landscape while embodying principles of openness, sustainability, and technological innovation.

The reading areas are arranged in tiered terraces, surrounded by walls of books.
Soft ambient light filters through north-facing skylights, complemented by individually adjustable reading lamps at each desk, creating a warm and tranquil atmosphere for focused study

Special Design Elements

The entire building adopts a fully precast reinforced concrete (RC) structure with split-faced precast façade panels—making it a rare example of a full-precast construction method in Taiwan. To achieve cut-and-fill balance during excavation, the soil from the basement dig was repurposed to shape a green slope in front of the main entrance. Now fully landscaped, this sloped lawn has become a beloved gathering spot on campus—offering panoramic views of the western dormitory area and serving as a popular location for watching the sunset.

The library consists of one basement level and seven floors above ground. The basement houses compact archives, while the upper floors provide a wide range of spaces—including reading rooms, quiet study zones, group discussion areas, audiovisual production studios, VR rooms, and board game areas—supporting diverse modes of learning.

The central atrium is the library’s most iconic space, encircled by multi-story book walls. Soft northern daylight pours in through the skylight, reducing heat and glare while fostering a calm, immersive reading environment.

Located behind the main building is a sunken retention basin that doubles as a landscape pond. Adjacent to this is a standalone, two-story 24-hour study center—open to students year-round. With windows on three sides and nearly 300 seats, the space offers a peaceful, light-filled setting. Along the lakeside, a cozy “Reading Cabin” provides a serene, nature-infused retreat for readers.
