Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, won the right to host the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship.
The old national stadium was outdated, so a new modern stadium for 85,000 people was urgently needed.
The high-profile competition attracted proposals from 19 world-renowned design firms, including:
• Norman Foster (UK)
• GMP – von Gerkan, Marg & Partners (Germany)
• Ove Arup (UK), the world’s largest engineering and design consultancy
• SCI (Canada)
In the first stage of evaluation, Hanarart received the highest number of votes, advancing to the final round alongside Norman Foster, GMP, and SCI.
In the final presentation, Hanarart was awarded the first prize for design, securing an overwhelming 24-vote majority to lead the Kyiv Olympic Stadium Redevelopment Project.
