Taipei Arena

Design Concept

Since its opening, the venue has primarily hosted both performance arts and sporting events. To maximize ticketed seating relative to the stage, an intentionally asymmetrical seating configuration was adopted. This, combined with retractable seating and adaptable floor dimensions, allows the arena to flexibly accommodate a wide variety of event types—showcasing remarkable spatial versatility. This functional asymmetry extends into the building’s exterior language, creating a highly recognizable architectural form.

The curved LED screen integrated with the main façade was Taiwan’s largest outdoor LED display at the time of installation, and remains a signature visual landmark of the arena.

Structural and Design Features

The façade merges expansive glass curtain walls with metal panels, expressing a contemporary architectural vocabulary of transparency and lightness. The roof employs a dual-layer metal system: the lower layer features an aluminum standing seam cladding known for superior waterproofing, while the upper layer is clad with titanium composite panels that not only elevate aesthetic quality but also offer self-cleaning properties—keeping the roof pristine since completion without the need for washing.

Taipei Municipal Stadium

To host the 2009 Deaflympics, Taipei Municipal Stadium replaced the original Taipei Stadium with a new international-standard athletics facility accommodating 20,000 spectators. Certified as an IAAF Class 1 venue, the sports complex also includes the Songshan Sports Center, Urban Stage, and tennis courts. It has hosted multiple international events such as the Deaflympics, Universiade, and World Masters Athletics Championships.
Situated at the intersection of Nanjing East Road and Dunhua North Road, the main grandstand faces west to east and connects to Dunhua North Road via a gentle 1:12 ramp, directing the primary spectator flow.

The site’s eastern boundary along Beining Road is constrained, resulting in a notably asymmetrical site condition. Unlike football or tennis stadiums that require symmetrical viewing conditions, the athletics stadium centralizes the start and finish lines, judging stands, VIP seating, and media facilities within the main grandstand. Accordingly, the design employs a large, concentrated grandstand on one side paired with smaller stands on the east, south, and north sides—optimizing spatial allocation to balance event functions and spectator circulation within a limited footprint.
A large arched steel roof structure above the main grandstand provides both sun shading and a distinctive architectural silhouette.
