Taipei Arena

Design Concept

Since its opening, the venue has primarily been used for performances and sporting events.

To maximize the number of ticket able seats, an asymmetrical seating arrangement relative to the stage was deliberately adopted.

This is combined with retractable seats and adjustable floor dimensions, allowing flexible adaptation to the spatial requirements of different types of events, fully demonstrating a highly flexible space management capability.

This function-driven asymmetry also extends to the building's exterior design, creating a highly recognizable architectural form.

The front facade features a curved LED screen, which was Taiwan's largest outdoor LED display system at the time and has become the most iconic visual highlight of the arena's exterior.

Special Design Elements

The facade design integrates large glass curtain walls with metal panels, expressing a transparent and light weight contemporary architectural language.

The roof employs a double-layer metal design: the lower layer uses an aluminum standing seam system, providing excellent waterproofing, while the upper layer is clad with titanium composite panels that enhance aesthetics and offer a self-cleaning effect.

Since completion, the roof has never required cleaning and remains as pristine as new.

Sustainability is also incorporated into the facility's functions.

Taipei Municipal Stadium

To host the 2009 Deaflympics, Taipei City demolished and rebuilt the original Taipei Stadium with the goal of creating an international-standard athletics stadium that meets Olympic-level specifications and accommodates 20,000 spectators

This athletics stadium also received the IAAF Class 1 certification.

The entire sports complex includes the Songshan Sports Center, City Stage, tennis courts, and other auxiliary facilities. Over the years, it has hosted numerous international sports events such as the Deaflympics, Universiade, and World Masters Games.

The venue is located at the intersection of Nanjing East Road and Dunhua North Road. The main grandstand faces west to east and is connected to Dunhua North Road by a gentle 1:12 slope guiding the primary spectator entrance.

The site's eastern edge borders Beining Road, where space is relatively limited, resulting in a noticeably asymmetrical overall layout.

Unlike football or tennis stadiums, which require symmetrical viewing conditions, the start and finish lines, judges' stands, VIP seating, and media facilities for athletics are all concentrated on the main grandstand.

Therefore, the stadium adopts a large, centralized main grandstand on one side, complemented by smaller stands on the east, south, and north sides.

This precise spatial arrangement maximizes use of the limited site while balancing event functions and spectator circulation.

Above the main grandstand is a large curved steel roof structure that not only provides shade but also serves as a key visual feature of the stadium’s exterior.
