Top City Taichung Store, completed in December 2011, exemplifies innovative architectural design and urban integration. Designed in collaboration with renowned architectural firm Altoon + Porter, the project seamlessly integrates aesthetics and functionality to create a vibrant new commercial destination.
Design Concept
Located along Taiwan Boulevard in Taichung’s 7th Redevelopment Zone, Top City opened as one of the largest department stores in Taiwan at the time.
The architectural form features fluid lines and a sail-like silhouette, evoking a sense of motion and modernity. The main façade utilizes a layered system with exterior glass curtain walls that capture and reflect changing light throughout the day, enhancing the building’s dynamic urban presence.
Special Design Elements
The façade adopts a double-skin system: an inner layer composed of sandwich metal panels serves as the primary exterior wall, while a secondary skin of ultra-clear glass is suspended 90 centimeters outward on extended brackets. The rear face of the glass is finished with white baked enamel, creating a clean, luminous effect.
Between the two skins, programmable LED lighting adds another dimension—allowing the building to glow with shifting colors at night, amplifying the commercial vibrancy of the district.
The interior retail layout is strategically organized: luxury boutiques occupy the first to third floors, establishing a high-end shopping atmosphere; general department store areas span the fourth floor and above, with the uppermost levels dedicated to dining and gourmet offerings.
