"Whale in Love" is a temporary large-scale public environmental art installation, set up in early 2020 on the water surface south of Qixian Bridge along Kaohsiung's Love River.
Design Concept
The artwork's frame consists of about 35 tons of steel, wrapped with approximately 15 tons of plastic waste, including plastic chairs, buckets, toys, and baskets.
Most materials were sourced from community recycling efforts; through the participatory campaign "You Throw, I Pick" the public jointly engaged in art creation and environmental advocacy, highlighting the urgency of marine debris issues and the potential for recycling and reuse.
Installed on the Love River's surface, the humpback whale sculpture appears poised to leap out of the water, interacting richly with riverside buildings, lighting, and pedestrians. At night, with lighting effects reflecting on the water, it became a visual highlight of the Kaohsiung Lantern Festival and the city's nighttime scenery.
